Locality: Turin Area, Italy
Summary: 16/09/08 The rate of urbanisation is increasing in UNECE countries in Europe and is expected to continue to increase for the foreseeable future. For example, in 2000, 73% of the population of UNECE countries in Europe were living in urban areas; by 2020, it is forecasted that 77% of the population in these countries will be living in urban areas (UNECE, 2005). The exploitable area available to each human is of 1.8 hectares per head and the world average footprint is 2.3 hectares per head. This means that we are in ecological deficit, that is, we need 1.3 planets like earth to meet our needs (Ecological footprint and biocapacity, report 2006). Trying to follow the work of climate scientists and experts like James Hansen, one can say it is at global level that we are facing the unavoidable problems posed by the development of our species. It seems necessary to begin to change our ways of living and, as our life's origins and moves in space, the architecture and planning science can do this and, through its work, can not only teach it but show how to do so. To approach landscape architecture has been for me a discovery rich in looks, materials, objects and subjects that go beyond the form and seem to recognize the necessity of our time to address the environmental crisis in a highly engineered way and, at the same time, in inducing a direct and indirect teaching of respect, of the res publica, and communion. I think that what attracts me most of this practice is the possibility that I see in the landscape architecture as a tool not only to solve environmental problems in our city but to rediscover a concept of "beauty" in a job that is not possible solved with the ended construction, but constantly in changing and in moving ... and this gives me a great sense of freedom, allows me to think of a time horizon that goes beyond that of my week, my year or my life.
